How To Pray

Start by speaking only with your spirit.
Silence all the rest, your heart, your head.
Stand inside that lake of tears you cried
And begin the music as you hear it.
After all these years, those people dead,
Tracking joy with sorrow as your guide,
Do not be afraid. You must not fear it
Now. It is not death that people dread,
But being. That is what you held inside
Even from yourself, lest time come near it.
Speak as if each word were how you bled,
And explain how easily you died.

Stephen Lefebure has been publlished in many places, notably Wild Song: Poems of the Natural World from The University of Georgia Press. He was once nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
